Having read ail spy novels published in France since World War II, the author uses the abundance and the interest of this literary form, devoid of cultural prestige but irreplaceable for studying society, idéologies and aspirations, in a brilliant démonstration which provides a new contribution to ideological history. The constant présence of nationalist ideology in spy novels shows a convergence with extrême right positions. The analysis of spy novels makes it also possible to sketch a theory of persuasive communication and reflects about the rôle of signs in social life and the political universe.
