This book presents a synthesis of the macroeconomic and sectorial aspects of the expansion of the European Union to central European and eastern European countires (PECOs), and tries hard to cull from several primary experiences with regional economic integration – the addition of Spain to the European Community in 1986, the German unification in 1990 and Mexico's adhesion to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994—teachings concerning modes of integration and the economic policies most likely to favor the convergence and recovery of the PECOs.
