The disruptive vote
The presidential and legislative elections of 2017
A process of creative destruction of a rare intensity swept through the French political system during the 2017 elections. It began with a series of dazzling downfalls, continued through a political campaign unable to focus on genuine issues, and then through an explosion in electoral mobility, to end in a post-election period comparable to a devastated battleground.
After the storm, now comes the time for analysis and the first research results.
The twenty new contributions published together here, along with a chronology and synthesis of the votes in the form of graphics and tables, signal the end of a political cycle that began after the Second World War. They show how the party system is waning, and how representative institutions are thrown into question in favour of network organisations and a demand for horizontal democracy.
Luc Rouban is a director of research at CNRS at the Center for Political Research at Sciences Po (CEVIPOF). His recent publications include La démocratie représentative est-elle en crise? (La Documentation française, 2018) and Le Paradoxe du macronisme (Presses de Sciences Po, 2018).
La matière noire de la démocratieDemocracy's Dark Matter
In a context where policy and campaign platforms have become like any other product for consumption, and in which an increasingly large part of the population feels deprived of autonomy and forced to suffer to the negative effects of globalization, class warfare has changed. Notions of representativity and universality are no longer relevant here.
Le Paradoxe du macronismeThe paradox of Macronism
In order to try and retrace the DNA of Macronism after a year of scandals, Luc Rouban draws on large-scale surveys of French public opinion, as well as on the entourage of the President and the new Assembly.
La démocratie de l'entre-soi
In this book, a team of researchers from CEVIPOF suggests that what is "common" is no longer based on what is public, but on what is private. That politics is now evolving in communitarian spaces of all kinds, family, religious denominations, political parties, oligarchies...
