Recent controversies regarding 'the end of history' and the ‘clash of civilisations’ have put vast intellectual constructs, such as universal history and the philosophy of history, back on the map. These constructs seek to understand humanity’s shared destiny and to give meaning to that destiny.
The articles in this volume examine such scholarly constructs and their ability to explain the workings of the world by calling upon philosophers, historians, anthropologists and geographers, as well as experts from non-Western (primarily Chinese and Arabic) cultures. The input of these scholars is viewed in the context of recent trends in global history: connected history, comparative history, international history, transnational history, etc. These reflections touch upon the actors and factors of universal history, as well as on the notions and concepts used in such research.
