Contemporary social movements occupy the public space to denounce experiences of injustice; that is their modus operandi. This is true for the Occupy movements, but also for #MeToo and the Yellow Vest protests. In order to better understand these movements' attitude to emancipation and particularly how they see the principle of equality, Réjane Sénac has interviewed 130 movement leaders, social entrepreneurs, and activists, with a wide range of affiliations. Two shared traits emerge from this study. Social movements – whether to promote environmentalism and social justice, or against racism, sexism, and speciesism – are radical due to the challenges and utopias they convey, and they are fluid in their refusal of a fixed, permanent framework.

The transformation of society is taking place through a wide range of tactics and experiments. The future will not be an overnight revolution so much as a garden we cultivate together.
