Démunis

Les travailleurs sociaux et la grande précarité
First Edition

In spite of political statements and policies, in France today more than 300,000 people live in situations of extreme poverty and have difficulty meeting their basic needs, according to the Fondation Abbé Pierre. The injustices of our development model are well known, and their causes and effects are well-documented – and yet they persist.

To try and understand the reasons for this powerlessness, Véronique le Goaziou went onto the front line, into the squats and slums of the Bouches-du-Rhône, and around Saint-Charles station in Marseille. For two years she accompanied social workers in their efforts to help the homeless and destitute.

This book sets out to describe and analyse these efforts, which often involve finding clever and impromptu solutions to overcome obstacles and break down barriers without waiting for ideal conditions (in reality, conditions are never ideal). It is work that often involves improvisation, such as when a pandemic forces them to set aside their task of prevention and integration and become humanitarian workers.
