La fabrication des billets en France

Construire la confiance monétaire 1800-1914
First Edition

Preface by Gilles Vaysset

In the age of digitalisation, it is tempting to prophesize the imminent demise of printed bank notes. But this would pay insufficient heed to the security it provides compared to digital payments, the breakdowns and cyber attacks faced by banking systems, not to mention the anonymity and tranquillity it provides consumers.

Drawing on the French example, Mathieu Bidaux returns to the historic sources of fabrication and distribution of paper money to explain the trust it continues to inspire today. From as early as 1800, the Banque de France carefully protected the manufacture of bank notes in order to provide its clients with a stable payment system.

Over the course of the 19th century, the Banque was increasingly innovative in protecting this eminently technical artefact from forgers, progressively industrialising the process of production to respond to increasing need. Under pressure from circumstances, from war and revolutions, it prudently and gradually decreased the face value of the notes to make them more accessible, remaining careful that legal provisions declaring the inconvertibility of the banknotes dissociates them from their metal equivalents. Eventually, during the first world war, bank notes became widely accessible, and their exchange value was fully recognised.
