Having left the political stage because of the growing influence of Gaullism, the "sage of Saint-Chamond", who is over 90 years of âge, is still periodically consulted by his dissident heirs : he keeps providing the very same advice and prescriptions which made him successful in 1952. Then did his image, already popular in the Loire department, of a politician who used a language which everyone understood, take root. Such popularity blurs the reality of the man and of his work at the head of several ministries. Collective memory has retained only the famous loans of 1952 and 1958. The author interviewed actors from the world of politics, the economy and the social arena under the Fourth and the Fifth Republics. She has checked testimonies with archives, mostly private. Her work throws new light on actors and decision-making mechanisms in France during three successive Republics.
