The end of the working life is rarely seen as a period of professional opportunity, either for those directly concerned or for the economy itself.
There are more older workers today than in previous generations, and the proportion of women among them is higher than it once was. These workers are also more healthy and generally more qualified than their predecessors, yet they remain subject to prejudice and discrimination. Their skills are considered obsolete, their faculties are assumed to be waning, and their demands are routinely neglected.
We need an entirely new perspective on the employment of older workers, one which takes into account the way professions have evolved, and which moves beyond debates on retirement age. Appropriate professional integration that is valorising and productive for older workers can only be achieved through an overarching policy that includes life-long qualifications and the adaptation of both the working environment and working hours to their needs.
