Was social reform the " Achilles' heel " of Gaullism ? Are the reasons for this failure to be found in General de Gaulle's ideology, or in the résistance of individuals and social and political forces ? Such questions, the author shows, can receive only partial answers. A detailed study of Action ouvrière reveals that the concepts of "participation " and " capital-labor association " were actually the stake of a doctrinal conflict. Having examined the unpublished archives of the Gaullist Rally of the French People (RPF), the author analyzes the organization and the life of Action ouvrière, the various stades of the associationist discourse, its many contradictions. Left-wing alibis of a largely conservative movement, its leaders could not influence the directions and the nature of Gaullism.
