2019 has seen exceptional attendance rates at museums and historic sites, vibrant live entertainment, spectacular increases in cultural consumption online, an ever more prolific supply of cultural events, and the steady progress of French people's spending on cultural activities (+6%).

The 2019 edition of Key Figures in Culture and Communication confirms French people’s appetite for culture that is open, liberal, and eclectic, and which is changing under the influence of technologies and the digital world.

In spite of the strength of these cultural practices, the direct economic impact of culture has not progressed since 2013 and has stabilised at 2.3% of the economy as a whole. In the context of the digital revolution currently underway, many cultural sectors are still searching for an economic model that can provide fair remuneration to all actors involved (authors, editors, distributors, online and store sales representatives). For example, although in 2018 recorded music made most of its profits online for the first time, this sector is far from having regained the economic conditions it was accustomed to before the digital shift, in spite of a constantly increasing consumption of music.

The challenge for public policy is to be able to accompany this evolution and ensure that the economic value created by this appetite for culture benefits all actors involved in these sectors. From this perspective, the 2019 edition of Key Figures in Culture and Communication provides an objective approach to the cultural sector as a whole and constitutes an essential tool to understand the issues the sector is facing.
