Benoît Martin has conducted an investigation at the heart of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to understand how its experts calculate phenomena such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, trafficking of endangered species and so forth. The author also reveals the workings of the construction of public data by the UN more broadly, in its global reports for example. He also explores the numerous other factors that influence this data-building – technological challenges, political compromises, diplomatic sensibilities, administrative logics, and individual ambitions.This painstaking work, combining interviews, observations in the field, and analysis of internal documents, shows that statistics are eminently political objects and that they must be considered with the appropriate critical distance, particularly at a time when they have an important impact on decision-making.
