The years from 1879 to 1914 are gene-rally présentée as « the golden âge » of the French Third Republic, an era of civic free-dom. This mythology does not endure a close examination./Succeeding governments were not enti-rely faithful to the principles which they upheld. They preserved, and used for repres­sion purposes, broad segments of the impérial légal System. In some cases, the protection of the political régime or the défense of the so­cial order caused wide breaks in this façade of freedom./The most serious restrictions on liber-ties appeared in areas where conflicts hâve now disappeared, thus allowing the birth of the legend. Putting things in a more realistic light produces a better understanding of the Third Republic.
