Le Secours populaire français 1945-2000

Du communisme à l'humanitaire
The Secours Populaire Français
From Communism to Humanitarian Aid

As the Secours Populaire Français celebrates its sixtieth anniversary, this first historical study of it simultaneously explores three converging historical fields: the history of the communist conglomerate, that of solidarity and humanitarian organizations, and that of engagement. Starting with archives of the French Communist Party and numerous interviews, Axelle Brodiez analyzes the ties between the party, its "satellite" organizations and the leaders of the popular relief. With the history of the popular relief emerges a picture of solidarity and humanitarian organizations, notably in terms of their relation to politics. More generally, she poses the question of the “crisis of militarism” to the benefit of a “volunteer phenomenon.”
