The French Communist Party is said to hâve been born at Tours, in December 1920. This birth did not necessarily endow it with ail the attributes of a " new type party " which the Communist International required of each of ils sections. The French Party had to go through a process of " bolshevisation ", whose significance can be clearly seen through an analysis of its first cadres. For this new study of the bolshevisation of the PCF, the author was allowed to use the archives of the Third International, now available at the Institut Maurice Thorez. By describing the first French communists, this book provides the indispensable background to the controversial issue of the rôle and functions of the Party's cadres.
