How did the Islamic view of the world and society react to Nasserism and the Baath movement in Egypt, Syria and Iraq in the 1960s ? Did the Islamic creed change from the form it had assumed as a resuit of the Moslem reform movement in the Arab world at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, so as to become progressive ? Or did the attempts at new synthèses which resulted from the reaction to political movements in the 1960s produce a political form of Islam which is by définition a fundamentalist force and a hindrance to progress ? This work looks at ideological texts of great importance : the officiai textbooks used for the compulsory teaching of Islam. Three political actors meet and mix — not without contradictions and some hésitation : the holders of « revolutionary power », the men of religion and the educated youth and their families. The texts are subjected to a thorough examination — based on a fairly simple System of combinatory conceptuai analysis — concerning the family, women, communities, society, national allegiances, the idéal political power, war and peace, and the just économie and social organisation. This is an introduction to the political thought resulting from the meeting of socialism and the political culture of the Arab Islamic world, as propagated, popularised and received.
