Global issues : religion & politics
God is not dead. He's in politics.
All over the world, God is back. Its rise can be seen both within States and internationally – even in the West where it seemed destined for an irreversible eclipse. This observation, promising for some, disturbing for others, is unequivocal: modernity has not provoked the social disappearance, nor the political demise, of religion. This can be seen in three major phenomena: the polarisation of societies divided between the elimination and the reaffirmation of belief; the renewed politicisation of religions; and the spiritualisation of politics. Yet this is by no means a return to ancient times, when all social life revolved around around religion.
The result of a collaboration between the Centre for International Research at Sciences Po and the Sociétés, religions, laïcités research group at the l’École pratique des hautes études, this book reveals the deep complexity of a contemporary space in perpetual tension between secularisation and the re-enchantment of the world.
Co-produced by the CERI, the Sciences Po Cartography Studio and the Presses de Sciences Po, the Global Issues series provides expert analysis with clear and pedagogical illustrations, colour maps and graphs incorporating the most recent data. This series is expanded and updated at:
