The year 1947 represents, in French history, a special moment for observing the intersection of two movements: economic obstacles, the rupture of war alliances, and the erosion of the colonial empire announced the end of the Third Republic just as nationalization, long range planning, and granting to engineers heralded a renewal and modernization of France. These movements took shape in a specific context: that of the Cold War. Feeling thus menaced by a conflict which left her behind, France applied herself to maintaining a national identity.
