The protest movement was primarily a résurgence of a typical American radicalism, faithful to its religions roots, Le. mostly moral and existential in its character. Its development displayed however an extension and a variety previously unknown. By studying its foundations and seeking to explain its failure, the author shows that while the protest movement was speciftcally American, it was also adapted to developed societies, and thus announced préoccupations which were to be found in Europe also.
