The first socio-historical analysis of identity "carding" of individuals, its authors, specialists in questions of nationalism and identification of persons, approach the subject through several dimensions: socio-historic (as in the Vichy absolutist period), international (in the case of England or Soviet Russia), and transdiciplinary. Several articles are devoted to biometry (identity cards and visas) and to registration. An analysis from the head of the biometric project INES (Secured Electric National Identity) for the French Ministry of the Interior completes the study. Beyond cultural and legal upheaval, the authors underline the direct ties between the identification effort and the increase of new dangers weighing on the State, like terrorism.
