This book demonstrates that the democratic crisis observed in western countries must be analyzed at the global level. It must also be seen in light of other planetary-level crises, including the 2008 economic crisis, the full electoral effects of which are only being felt several years later, the refugee crisis, terrorism and climate change. The Brexit referendum, the election of Donald Trump in the United States and of Emmanuel Macron in France, the rise of the extreme right in Austria, the Five Star movement in Italy, and Syriza in Greece; western democracies have seen a series of electoral "thunderclaps" that have shaken the major post-war party systems to their core.
This evolution is part of an older trend, visible as early as the 1970s, that saw voting participation and governing parties decline, electoral volatility increase, and the emergence of a new cleavage based on immigration and national identity. This process was accentuated after 2008 with the emergence of new parties and the collapse or brutal re-direction of old ones, in reaction to neoliberalism and the increasing inequalities it produces.
In order to understand the changes underway within western political systems and investigate their future, we must analyze them on a global level. It is also imperative to take into account all social, economic, and environmental phenomena associated with them, in the context of the “global revolution” underway since 1945.
